10 Diverse Summer Book Releases 2020

We’ve all been meaning to diversify our reading and summer book releases 2020 is the perfect way to start. In times like today, it’s important that we can support authors of colour in any way we can. Their books can often be overshadowed by popular books within the book community on Twitter and Instagram. I did the same post for March releases, if you’re interested in finding more recommendations, you can find that post here. Although, as I discovered these books, I found that I struggled to find many books by authors of colour. Here’s to hoping publishers can change that one day.

Fantasy Summer Book Releases 2020

Where Dreams Descend By Janella Angeles

A YA fantasy featuring a group of magicians where magic is both feared and celebrated. This book is Janella Angeles’ debut and it releases on the 25th August. I get the Night Circus vibes and something tells me this might be a favourite among other bookworms.

A Song Below Water By Bethany C. Morrow

A YA fantasy featuring mermaids, two sisters who are of colour and truly love each other- count me in! YA fantasy rarely features sibling bonds and this book, which is set in Portland, sounds incredible. It releases on the 2nd June.

Hunted By The Sky By Tanaz Bathena

Set in a world inspired by medieval India, this book is filled with adventure, discovery and forbidden romance. Although I read a lot of fantasy, I rarely find books which aren’t set in Europe. Hunted By The Sky releases on the 23rd June and I can’t wait to read it.

A Song Of Wraiths And Ruin By Roseanne A. Brown

A slow burn enemies to lovers romance between royals and a refugee. This one of my favourite tropes ever and I’m so excited to see what twist Brown has done for her own book. I was already intrigued by that but this book is also inspired by West African folklore which interests me more.

Contemporary Summer Book Releases 2020

Party Of Two By Jasmine Guillory

A romance between Olivia who is starting her own law firm, and Max who’s a junior senator. A relationship that starts off in secret, well we all know that trope is a rocky road. This book releases on the 23rd June.

I’ll Be The One By Lyla Lee

A bisexual Korean American teen deals with fatphobia, an unstable family and falling in love. This book is an own voices rom-com and sounds like the perfect contemporary book which is enjoyable and teaches valuable messages too. Releases on the 16th June.

Sex and Vanity By Kevin Kwan

I enjoyed Crazy Rich Asians and so I’m curious to see what this book brings. A comedy discussing matters of two cultures and falling in love, I’m sure Sex and Vanity will be just as entertaining as Kevin Kwan’s other works. Releases on the 30th June.

The Boyfriend Project By Farrah Rochon

This book is describes as three young women who become friends when the live Tweeting of a disastrous date leads them to discover they’ve all been duped by the same man. From this alone, so many iconic rom-com movies come to mind such as John Tucker Must Die. I’m sure this book will be hilarious and packed with fun. Releases on the 9th June.

Historical Fiction Book Releases 2020

Mexican Gothic By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Set in 1950s Mexico, this gothic novel is filled with family secrets and mystery. If you’re a fan of classics such as Jane Eyre and Rebecca then this modern twist of those novels might pique your interest. Releases on the 30th June.

The Vanishing Half By Brit Bennett

This book tells the story of twin sisters who choose to live different lifestyles despite them being inseperable at one time. Telling the story of generations from the 1950s to the 1990s, Brit Bennet explores race, family expectations and relationships. This book releases on the 2nd June.

I hope you all have manged to find some books which have interesed you! I know I’m looking forward to reading them all. If you have any diverse book recommendations, I’d love to know! I’m always looking for more books to add on to my Goodreads.
