Film Creed II:Review

Watch the trailer here.

The hype for the sequel to Creed, which was released 30th November in the UK, had me buying tickets immediately. I would definitely recommend the film for those who love to watch a bit of drama mixed in with intense sports matches/fights. The director Steven Caple Jr created a remarkable film with characters that had so much depth to them.

Plot Of Film

The plot was clear and captivating, it even managed to escape some clichés. Creed II tells the story of Adonis Creed who is writing a legacy of his own as he discovers himself. The film follows on from Rocky IV where Adonis Creed’s father Apollo, had died from a boxing match from Drago (Dolph Lundgren) who had struck punch after punch offering no sympathy.

The film starts happy and light as we find out that Adonis Creed (Michael B Jordan) is expecting a child with his fiancée Bianca (Tessa Thompson). Adonis is offered an opportunity to fight with Victor Drago (Florian Munteanu), Ivan Drago’s son. Despite the warnings from Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) and Bianca Adonis is determined to go through with the match.

We see how Adonis refuses to accept that Victor could be competition which also puts his relationship to the test with Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) as he didn’t listen to the advice Rocky offered. Adonis and Rocky’s relationship was interesting as it was quite different from the previous Rocky films. We see them deal with their feelings: Creed with his father’s death and Rocky with his own beliefs. It becomes an unforgettable moment of the film.

Although the plot was clear, it was predictable as the director seemed to have followed a storyline which most sport films head towards. The music, cinematography and acting saved Creed II from being like any other sports film.

The soundtrack fit perfectly with scenes. Sometimes it would be dark and almost eerie so with the music puncturing the atmosphere, I was on the edge of my seat. I could almost hear the emotion through the music. From the violent and up-close music to the joyous, fluffy music, the soundtrack made the film that extra bit exciting. I loved the cinematography in the film! I would almost lean forward in my seat as I waited for the scene to transition. It made the film much more pleasing to watch; an added bonus.

Acting in Creed II was absolutely amazing; I have no criticism to offer on that subject. The main characters had it spot on, it was very precise. The tension is built when arguments occur and the way words are spoken with such force, I could feel how they felt.

Victor had little lines yet he didn’t need it, he was facing his father’s mistakes, wishing he could redeem himself above all the hate he was receiving. His presence was merely enough to understand how vulnerable he was. Other characters such as Bianca, expressed their worries about history repeating itself. We see an understanding, caring fiancée who fiercely loves her family and wants only the best for them. I could explain more about a certain character, however no spoilers!

Overall, Creed II was fantastic, a film that is definitely worth seeing in the cinemas! I would love to rant more about the many other perfect moments but I don’t want to spoil it for others. I hope my word has convinced you to watch the film. Let me know is you’ve seen it! I’m intrigued to know your opinions! Did you like? Was it worth your time?
